Roosevelt Elementary Lingo
- After School Care- There are many after school care options for your students, and many programs that will pick up from the school. We also have a YMCA after after-school program on site. A complete list is available in the Front Office.
- After School Enrichment Program/Clubs- Each fall and spring your child will have the opportunity to explore and develop a variety of new interests. All Clubs are taught in a fun, safe, skill-building environment on school grounds. Registration is through active.com and available on a first come, first serve basis. We highly recommended that you review the FAQ’s that are sent home via backpack and available on our website prior to registration since Clubs are extremely popular and often sell out quickly. Dismissal is at 3:15 pm and pick up is under the Dad’s Club Pavilion on Concordia for walkers, carline is handled the same as regular dismissal and kids participating in YMCA will be brought there by the instructor. This program is completely run by the PTA.
- AGP - Academically Gifted Program - Gifted program services are available for students who meet Florida’s criteria for classification as gifted. The process for gifted identification includes referral, screening and evaluation.
- Attendance Line- If your child is absent from school, please call the 24 hour attendance line as soon as possible. Please leave a message with your name, your child’s name, teacher’s name, grade, reason for absence, and a phone number. The attendance line is 813-272-3090 ext. 1
- Backpack Mail- is our paperless means of distributing papers, through your child's backpack/school folder.
- Birthday Sundaes- Once a month the PTA schedules a day to celebrate the students in that birthday month. They are given ice cream with a variety of toppings. Summer Birthdays are celebrated in August and a sign up genius to volunteer to scoop ice cream is in the Charge as well as the Volunteer section on our website!
- Book Fair- Roosevelt hosts a Scholastic Book Fair twice a year typically in October and March. Parents can go in and pick out items with students or give them cash or set up an ewallet account for them which is a secure, cash free way to shop with a preauthorized amount. https://bookfairs.scholastic.com/bookfairs/parent-how-it-works.html
- Calendar - The school calendar is always in the Charge and posted on Facebook and you can also subscribe on our website to the school calendar as well as particular grade calendar to have all pertinent events on your phone and calendars. Once subscribed any changes made to the calendar will be updated automatically.
- The Charge- A weekly newsletter for parents that includes upcoming dates along with school information. Please subscribe on our website when you register for newsletters.
- Conscious Discipline - This is practiced daily by every teacher at Roosevelt. It is a way of organizing schools and classrooms around the concept of a School Family. Each member of the family learns the skills needed to successfully manage life tasks such as learning, forming relationships, communicating effectively, being sensitive to others’ needs and getting along with others. It is built on the premise of developing discipline within children rather than applying discipline to them.
- Dad’s Club- Meetings are held monthly with alternating morning and evening meetings. The dads assist with a variety of projects including cooking monthly for Teddy’s Cafe. They host a Clay Shoot, Golf Tournament and a Fishing Tournament each year. - ESE- Exceptional Student Education - Eligible students are provided supports and/or services per their Individual Education Plan (IEP) which is based on each child’s unique needs.
- Friday Folders- Friday Folders are a method of sending home communications or work from the week. Friday folders should be checked and returned on Mondays.
- Fun Run- PTA’s spring fundraiser (typically the Thursday before Spring Break) where students receive donations to support the school while learning about important character traits and earning prizes. This is sometimes referred to as Boosterthon which is the company that handles it and every year is a new theme. The day of the Fun Run, students walk the track and participate in other fun outdoor activities with a DJ. If 4th and 5th graders raise enough they get to participate in a color run which is colored corn starch. A majority (61%) of the proceeds go directly to the school and teachers receive 10% of their class donation to purchase items for their classroom. Parents are encouraged to attend and cheer on the students.
- iPEEPS - Intensive Primary Exceptional Education Preschool Services - Children ages three to five who meet eligibility requirements can receive services designed to meet each child's individual needs. Roosevelt offers a blended program with VPK
- My Payments Plus- This is both an app and website that you can pay for meals, view cafeteria purchases, receive low balance alerts, or enroll in autopay. https://www.mypaymentsplus.com/welcome

- Nature Trail- This is the playground area on the Ferdinand Side near the “1st grade” wing. It was named this because it was a nature trail with decking until it was removed to make space for the playground in 2017 but is still often referred

- PTA- Our PTA is actively involved in improving the school. We pride ourselves on being inclusive and welcome anyone to attend a board meeting, join a committee or become a board member. - Rainy Day Dismissal- Please refer to Parent Handbook.
- Recess- State law requires that students have at least 20 minutes of unstructured, supervised, free-play each day. This usually take place outdoors at various locations throughout the school and may be indoors based on weather. All 1st through 5th graders also have PE with Coach twice a week.
- Roosevelt Revelry-This is our annual fundraiser/auction that takes place in November. It is a night-time, adult only event with a different theme each year.
- SLAM Celebration- Each quarter, students who read a minimum SLAM books reading goals are invited to attend the SLAM Celebration, which is coordinated by Mrs. Cannon, our media specialist. This year PTA purchased SLAM books for every classroom.
- Spirit Night- Several establishments in our community have teamed up with Roosevelt to give back to our school through spirit nights. On designated days, they give back a percentage of their sales to our school. We have all different nights scheduled throughout the year, so keep an eye out in The Charge and on the Calendar.
- Spirit Wear- Roosevelt “gear”- We sell shirts, dresses, car magnets, bows, backpacks, sweatshirts etc. All spirit wear is available online. Purchase items prior to Meet the Teacher and receive a complimentary Roosevelt reusable shopping tote. Pick up for preordered items with be in the cafeteria.
- Sponsorships- We have all different levels of business sponsorships and family sponsorships available. Look for information on sponsorship opportunities to come home at the beginning of the year with Roosevelt Revelry information - most levels receive tickets to the event.
- Student Connect – The online site that allows students to access several of the programs they use at school, at home. All they need is their student number and the password they have set up at school. https://students.sdhc.k12.fl.us/wps/portal/students
- Student number- The seven digit number assigned to your student by the school district. This number is used for a TON of programs, so please help your student learn it. We suggest saving it in your phone so you’ll always have it at hand since you will need it to sign your student in and out.
- Tardy students- Students are tardy if they are not in their classroom at 7:40. If your student arrives after 7:40, please park and walk them into the front office to be signed in.
- Teddy’s Cafe- A monthly recognition for students in Citizenship, Art, Music and PE. When a child earns recognition and an invitation to Teddy’s Cafe, parents/guardians are invited to attend a cookout in the Courtyard hosted by the Dad’s Club.
- Teddy’s Country Fair- Family event hosted by the PTA every spring. There is a DJ with bounce houses, games and food available for purchase. It’s always a great time!
- VPK- Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten
- Volunteer Form- The online volunteer application (formerly called SERVE) must be completed before you can volunteer in any capacity at the school (media center, field trips, homeroom parent, etc.) This is also called Y.E.S. When completing you only need to check General Volunteer and Chaperone. This form must be completed each year and must be on file to volunteer in a classroom or chaperone a field trip. It can be completed in July for the next school year but could take 2-3 weeks to process so please complete early. - Walk to School Wednesdays - This program, developed with community partner Sidewalk Stompers, gets kids and families active in the morning, improving their physical, mental, and community health, while also reducing traffic and improving safety around the school. Every Wednesday, students walking or biking to school check in with volunteers at Concordia or Ferdinand entrances, earning prizes for themselves and their classrooms, culminating with the Stomping Cup Trophy presentation to the class with the most walkers. There are two walking school bus locations for students who live too far or across busy roads, at Corona Park and on Drexel Ave.
- Walking Club- A program that allows our students to exercise prior to starting school so they will be focused for the day. It begins at 7:15-7:35 each morning. It takes place out on the covered Buccaneers court/track with teachers present to supervise students and record their laps. They turn in their cards for prizes and are recognized on the morning show.
